A project consultant is often the right fit if you need a one-time strategy or assessment and already have people to carry out and maintain the result. A full-time AI hire usually makes sense when your company has enough ongoing AI work to keep one person busy every week, and you want that person inside the business. A fractional director fits the space in between: you need someone to own AI decisions and vendors every month, but not 40 hours a week.
