When should a small business not build custom software?

Don't build custom when a product already fits, when the workflow is rare or still changing, or when the savings don't clearly cover building and running it. Very small businesses are often better off with a well set-up off-the-shelf tool.

Keep renting when

The tool fits your process, costs little and does its job. Email, accounting, payroll and certified systems like an EHR are nearly always worth keeping.

Wait when

The workflow is still changing every month, you don’t have the data or access a build needs, or no one on your team owns the process. Automating a process nobody has settled on just automates the confusion.

A good review tells you

If a free workflow review finds that what you have is fine, that’s what it should say. The most useful answer is sometimes a setting you haven’t switched on yet.
